Undergraduate

The UMD English major trains students in key approaches to analyzing literature, rhetoric and media; in the structures, uses and effects of the English language; and in theories and practices of writing from the creative to the professional. 

The flexibility of our English B.A. in particular, lets students participate liberally in a wealth of experiential- and service-learning opportunities around the department, the university and the D.C. metro area, as well as pursue a sustained research or creative project as part of our English Honors program. The major coursework and these added ways of maximizing the degree together allow students to articulate their skills to employers and prepare for careers in fields such as law, journalism, creative or professional writing, project management, film or game production, and information science. Thirty-five percent of our students are double majors, combining the English major’s advanced training in writing, researching and critical thinking with their other skills to offer a cutting edge in their future careers. 96% of graduates from our major programs are working full time, interning or pursuing graduate studies within six months.
