Student Organizations
There are three main undergraduate student organizations in the Department of English at the University of Maryland: the African Diaspora Reading Group, the English Undergraduate Association (EUA), and Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. The English Undergraduate Association and the African Diaspora Reading Group are open to all English majors, minors, and non-majors.
Sigma Tau Delta is open by application only.
Our undergraduates also run Paper Shell Review, our journal of literary and media criticism, and participate in ZineClub through BookLab. Both are open to all students.
Undergraduate
Our major has four established tracks:
- Literary and Cultural Studies
- Language, Writing, and Rhetoric
- Creative Writing
- Media Studies
Students are encouraged to specialize within and across multiple field strengths of the apartment. They are also encouraged for interdisciplinary pursuits, such as the English Education double major and the Cinema Media Studies major. Learn more about the undergraduate program.
For undergraduate students interested in graduate studies, a larger research project, or to collaborate one-on-one with a professor, consider the English Honors Program. The English Department also offers multiple minors. Learn about them here.
Graduate
Our department also offers several graduate level programs in English:
- Comparative Literature Ph.D.
- English Ph.D.
- English M.A. (Literature or Language, Writing, and Rhetoric)
- English M.F.A (Fiction and Poetry)
In addition, graduate students are able to earn certifications in several subjects. Learn more about the graduate program.
